Stedelijk Museum
From 16.09.17 - 18.02.18 , the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam presented "Sticky Business" – The Seduction of Sugar in Art*. In this multisensory exhibition, the sweet substance takes center stage in a myriad of ways. Heavenly or hellish? You can ponder that very question while licking a cola-flavoured artwork from Joseph Marr.

"Sticky Business" - Group Exhibition
Among the highlights is a monumental candy landscape created by the duo Pip & Pop. Artist Joseph Marr has crafted sculptures of female figures that visitors are invited to lick—an interaction that causes the artworks to gradually transform over the course of the exhibition. Visitors can choose from a selection of flavors: cola, Fanta, raspberry, and licorice. Also on display is Helmut Smits’s "cola machine"—an artwork that filters water directly from cola and carries a distinct political undertone. It draws attention to the startling reality that, in certain parts of the world, cola is more readily available than clean drinking water.

Exhibitioin Information
Additionally, "Sticky Business" explores the role of sugar and sweets across different cultures and reflects upon major issues inextricably linked to sugar—such as corruption, slavery, and food addiction. Visitors can also learn more about "feeders," for instance; these are individuals who derive (sexual) pleasure from feeding others or being fed themselves. There is room for a wide spectrum of ideas. In addition to art objects, several films are screened throughout the exhibition. An extensive accompanying program of events is also documented.
