Together @ Berghain
“Together” is a monumental nine-meter narrative frieze cast from 300kg of cola-flavored sugar. Created in 2013, it serves as a site-specific dialogue with the architecture of the former heating plant—where the monumental sobriety of the building fuels the excess within. The work echoes the muscular torsos of the Lustgarten portal at Schlüter’s Stadtschloss, drawing a direct line between Baroque body ideals and the gym-defined silhouettes found on the Berghain dance floor today.
The Materiality of Desire
The choice of cola-flavored sugar is a deliberate nod to addiction and psychoactive pleasure. Preserved in resin, the material captures a well-known, tactile quality of candy: as temperatures rise, it becomes sticky. In "Together," this sugary clinginess is metaphorical—the bodies seem to melt into one another, representing the visceral, inseparable nature of human interconnectedness and the heat of the club environment.
A story told in three stages.
The frieze moves through a natural progression of attachment, moving from raw, animalistic sexuality to more sublime, tender forms of togetherness. Over its nine-meter length, the narrative shifts until the sex disappears entirely, replaced by a scene of deep, blissful attachment. It interweaves intimate experience with objective representation, capturing the fleeting intensity of human connection without surrendering the sitters' privacy to voyeurism.
Where Art Meets Life
Unlike traditional gallery pieces, "Together" exists without a pedestal or frame in a space where photography is strictly forbidden. It succeeds in a goal the 20th-century avant-garde ardently desired: tearing down the barrier between art and life. Whether viewed as a study of modern body imagery or simply as a backdrop for a drink and a chance encounter, the work remains an integral, "communal" part of the Berghain experience.
